What Smiley Man Homework is

Smiley Man Homework is a homework app for iPhone and iPad. Your child gets each assignment into the app by snapping a sheet, picking a Classroom screenshot, typing it or saying it. The app proposes each assignment with its Class and due date, and your child confirms it. Home shows the Tonight list: what to work on today. When the work is finished, your child marks it Done and can add a photo of it as Proof.

Parents stay informed by email and don't need the app. One child uses the app per device.

Parent settings

Parent setup and settings live behind the lock button on Home, called Parent settings. Until a Parent PIN exists, the Grown-up check opens it. After that, it always asks for the Parent PIN, and it locks again whenever the app goes to the background.

In parent settings you can manage parent emails, the Daily digest time, your child's nickname, Require Proof, reminders, cloud Reading, the subscription, Export homework, Stop old Parent page links, Delete everything, and Change the Parent PIN.

The Grown-up check

The Grown-up check is a short math question that's easy for an adult, like a multiplication with an addition. It shows before a Parent PIN exists, and before resetting a forgotten PIN. A wrong answer brings a new question.

It's a speed bump that keeps a child from wandering in. It isn't a lock and it isn't consent: the Parent PIN is the lock, and confirming your email is your consent.

Set up parent emails

  1. On your child's Home, tap the lock (Parent settings) and answer the Grown-up check.
  2. Choose a 4-digit Parent PIN.
  3. Read the notice about what we collect.
  4. Enter your child's nickname and your email. Please use a first name or an initial as the nickname, not a full name. You can also type your child's full name; it stays on the phone and is used only to hide the name before photos and homework leave the phone.
  5. Open the email we send, tap its link, and press the button on the page to confirm. Confirming is your consent. Until then, homework and the nickname stay on the phone.
  6. Come back to the app. It checks for your confirmation each time it opens.

If the email doesn't come, check your spam folder, then use Send the email again, or Use a different email. A setup nobody confirms is deleted after 7 days, along with the email address. About a day after you confirm, we send a second email repeating what you agreed to and how to withdraw.

You can also choose Skip parent emails for now during setup. The app still works on the phone, and you can set up emails later from parent settings.

Add another parent. In parent settings, under Parent emails, choose Add a parent and enter their email. Up to 6 parents can get emails. Each one confirms their own address. In parent settings you choose whether each parent gets Done emails and the Daily digest. Removing a parent stops their emails, and their Parent page links stop working.

Parent emails and the Parent page

Done email. Sent as soon as your child marks an assignment Done. It says what was finished, its Class and due date, whether it was on time, and links to its Proof on the Parent page. Photos are never attached. If your child chose Nothing to photograph, the email says so.

Daily digest. Sent on school days at 7:00 pm in your child's time zone, plus a Sunday look at the week ahead. You can change the time in parent settings. It covers what's overdue, what's due today and tomorrow, what was finished and added, any changes (deleted or moved assignments), Guessed due dates to double-check, and the Streak. On a day nothing was added, it says so plainly. The app knows weekends but not school holidays yet.

Parent page. Every email has a private link to the Parent page, with no password. It shows this week and next, each assignment with its Class color, due date, status and Proof photos, and you can step back through earlier weeks. A link works for 14 days, and each new email brings a fresh one.

Turn off your emails. Every email has a link to stop them, and the Parent page has Turn off my emails. In parent settings, each parent's Done emails and Daily digest can be switched on or off.

The Parent PIN

The Parent PIN guards parent settings, purchases and parent screens. It has 4 digits. Easy PINs, like 1111 or 1234, aren't accepted. After 5 wrong tries the keypad waits before the next try, starting at 30 seconds and growing up to an hour.

To change it, open parent settings and choose Change the Parent PIN. The PIN is kept on the phone only, and it stays if the app is deleted and installed again, so deleting the app isn't a way around it.

Forgot the PIN

The Parent PIN can't be recovered, because the phone keeps only a scrambled check of it. The way back is to delete everything and set up again. On the PIN screen, choose Forgot the PIN? and answer the Grown-up check.

  • With parent emails set up, choose Ask to start over. Because this also deletes the Parent page history, Delete everything and start over opens a day after you ask. Entering the PIN before then cancels the request, and so does Cancel the request.
  • Without parent emails, you can delete everything and start over right away.

Starting over deletes all homework, Classes and Proof photos, and parents get an email saying so. It doesn't cancel the subscription.

Delete everything

Delete everything removes all homework, Classes, Proof photos, parent emails and settings, including the Parent PIN, on your child's device and on our server. It can't be undone, and it doesn't cancel the subscription. Parents get an email confirming it.

In the app. Open parent settings, go to Privacy and data, and choose Delete everything, then confirm. If the device is offline, the app clears the device right away and finishes the deletion on our server as soon as it's back online.

On the Parent page. Only the primary parent, the one who set up the app, can do this. Choose Email me a link to delete everything. We email you a link that works for an hour; only the newest link works. Open it and press Yes, delete everything. Nothing is deleted until you press that button, so a forwarded email can't delete your family's data. If you change your mind, ignore the email.

One assignment. The primary parent can also choose Delete this assignment on the Parent page. It leaves the phone the next time the app syncs.

Use this if an email may have been forwarded. In parent settings, under Privacy and data, choose Stop old Parent page links and confirm. Parent page links in emails already sent stop working. Emails keep coming as usual, each with a new link, and unsubscribe links keep working. It shows once parent emails are confirmed.

Cloud Reading

Reading turns a photo of a sheet into proposed assignments, and your child checks each one before it's saved. Typed and spoken homework is always read on the phone.

On phones with Apple Intelligence turned on, Apple's models read sheet photos, on the phone or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, and there is no cloud Reading setting. On phones without Apple Intelligence, such as an iPhone 13 mini, or with it turned off, parent settings show a Cloud Reading card.

Turning on Allow cloud Reading opens a permission screen that names Anthropic. If you allow it, the phone first blacks out the Name and Student number fields and crops the sheet, then the photo and the text it read go through our server to Anthropic's Claude to find the assignments and due dates. To suggest Steps for a big assignment, its title and Class go the same way, as text only, with your child's nickname hidden. Our server doesn't keep the photo. Cloud Reading needs a confirmed parent email first.

Without it, your child can still type or say homework, and photos are read, and Steps are planned, with simpler rules on the phone. You can turn it off anytime in parent settings; it stops on the phone at once.

Due dates

The app never invents a due date. A date counts as a due date only when the text ties it to "due", for example "due on Oct 14". A date on its own on a sheet is the Assigned date, the day the work was handed out. When typing or saying homework, a day your child mentions counts as the due date, like "spelling test Thursday".

When nothing says when it's due, the app suggests a Guessed due date, usually the next school day. Your child confirms it, and parent emails mark it as guessed. Your child can edit or delete any assignment, and moved due dates and deletions show up in the Daily digest.

Classroom screenshots

The app doesn't connect to Google Classroom. Instead, your child takes a screenshot of a Classroom assignment, then in the app chooses Add homework, then Classroom screenshot, and picks it from Photos. The app reads it like a sheet, and your child confirms what it found. Before a screenshot is read in the cloud, any line showing your child's name is hidden.

An assignment from a Classroom screenshot is one to turn in on Classroom. When your child marks it Done, the app shows Now turn it in on Classroom, with an Open Classroom button. The Classroom app needs to be on the phone for that button. Your child can switch any assignment between paper and Classroom.

Proof photos

When your child marks an assignment Done, the app asks for a photo of the finished work. Proof is optional unless you turn on Require Proof in parent settings. Nothing to photograph, for reading or studying, is always allowed and is noted in the Done email.

Before a Proof photo is uploaded, the phone blacks out the name and student number fields when it can find them. A photo can still show your child's name, for example in handwriting. The photo on the phone isn't changed. Our server keeps Proof photos for 30 days so the Done email and the Parent page can show them. If your child removes a Proof photo in the app, it leaves the Parent page at the next sync.

Reminders

Reminders are scheduled on the device. Nothing comes from our server. In parent settings, under Reminders, you can switch each one on or off and set its time:

  • After-school reminder: once each school day when the Tonight list has work, at 4:00 pm unless you change it. Tapping it opens the Tonight list.
  • Evening nudge: only if something due the next school day isn't Done yet, at 6:30 pm unless you change it.
  • Turn-in reminders: a morning backpack check on the due date for paper work that's Done, and a Classroom nudge right after Done.

The top of the Reminders card says whether reminders can arrive. If notifications haven't been asked for yet, tap Turn on reminders and allow them. If they were turned off in the Settings app, tap Open Settings to turn them back on. Reminders pause while there's no subscription.

Subscription

Smiley Man Homework has a 14-day free trial through Apple, then costs $4.99 a month or $34.99 a year. Family Sharing is on. Until a parent starts the trial, your child can see Home but can't add homework.

Purchases sit behind the Parent PIN, so your child never sees a sales pitch. In parent settings, under Subscription:

  • Start the free trial or See plans to subscribe.
  • Manage subscription to change or cancel through Apple, once you're subscribed.
  • Restore purchases if the subscription was bought with this Apple Account and doesn't show.

If the subscription ends, the app becomes read-only. Your child can still see all their homework and save a copy, and you can use Export homework under Privacy and data. Adding homework, Reading, reminders and parent emails stop. Data is deleted on the normal retention schedule.

Privacy

Read the full privacy policy. In short: no ads, no tracking, no AI training on your child's data, and no AI chat for your child. Homework stays separate from Smiley Man Check-In.
